DAY 29
Lenola
- tour entry 29
Monday 11.29.99 new orleans
"ego tickles" or "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the big easy!"
sean -
on our last tour, we had a night off in new orleans which is both good
and bad. From what little I recall, we had a good time. Fortunately
this time we are playing, and the show is being promoted and supported
by WTUL at Tulane University. Our first stop is at the
radio station to meet the people there and do an interview on the air.
We are early and kill time on campus watching the students do their
thing and feeling kinda old. Weather is too good for words, perfect
out, especially considering our friends back home are enduring a strong
blast of winter. The interview is fine, scott informs the listening
area that he is a midget, they play some songs of ours, give away tickets
for the show to callers (who actually call in!). We are all taken aback
by the enthusiasm the DJs have about our band and the show tonight.
They explain all the work they've done for the last several weeks promoting
the show, as well as the mexican dinner feast they are preparing for
us before the show. They are genuinely surprised when we explain that
the hospitality is rarely this good for us on the road.

After laundry, we head to Bourbon street for a quick tour, as Sean mentioned
the last time we were there i got so intoxicated, that I when we got
back to our motel room, I had to hold on to the bedpost and place one
foot on the floor, just to stop the spinning . But I digress. We get
back from the little stroll around one of the most beautiful places
on Earth, just in time to meet up with Girl Scout Heroin (whom we are
playing with tonight and tomorrow) and the Team Tul WTULradio staff.
Peggy and the radio folks feed us a delicious vegan feast in our van
and present us with a wonderful cake that says "Team Tul Loves You!"
I wanted to weep little tears of joy for their unbridled support for
us. we step in the club and load in. I can feel in my bones that it
looks like a dead night. The club is very dank and it appears like we're
going to have a case of the Monday night blues. Just when I was about
to drown my sorrows in the free Schaeffer the bar provides, a steady
stream of people filter in the next hour. Yippee!
Sean - so, for a Monday night, we are thrilled with the turnout.
The place is packed. After a mellow opening solo acoustic act (which
includes a good Velvet Underground cover), Girl Scout Heroin
get up and play a really good set of weird power pop. They have a brand
new drummer who has only rehearsed with them once. You couldn't tell.
They were very solid. We get up and play one of our better sets of the
whole trip. The crowd is fantastic, yelling and dancing and all that.
Since it is after midnight, it is now officially Jay's birthday. At
the end of the set the crowd is conducted by dave & scott to sing 'Happy
Birthday' and I am inspired to smash the WTUL cake over jay's head.
After impact, he turns and lobs huge chunks of cake at the rest of us,
catching me in the back of the head several times. Within minutes most
of our equipment is dripping with caramel icing and moist cake. A fitting
end to a good night. Endless thanks to the WTUL folks. If only every
show was this fun.
