Entry 1 - "Poor Dead Midgets" 11.1.99-Millvale Industrial Theater - Pittsburgh PA
Sean - smooth sailing all afternoon, jay at the wheel, me carrying on my now legendary position of co-pilot extraordinaire. Everyone thrilled to be leaving home, still riding a general buzz from unofficial send-off show in philly on Friday night. Weekend was a blur of tying up loose-ends and goodbyes to loved ones. After months of planning and stress, its official, we've gotten the hell out of Dodge

A last minute stop at a dollar store in NJ had Dave Grubb emerging with what will be this tour's dashboard mascot. A malleable little balloon paperweight smiley face with bright green hair. Jay wasted no time in bestowing our new friend with the name 'Fuckberry'. lenola fuckberry

Unlike the other groups playing to night, we are shamefully punctualto M.I.T. The fliers and press clips lining the walls assure you this is "the place" to play in town, looks like a lot of good rock has graced this stage. Finally meet the infamous Manny Theiner, as well as philly ex-pat Anthony Notaro, both helped in setting up this show and are quite cordial. We even get a helping hand loading in. Monday nights are tough but there are in fact some folks here to see us, thrilling. The first group, Land, begins their set with some azusa plane/fsa style sheets of noise until their one guitarist blows his amp, leaving the other guitarist and drummer to do their thing (that thing being a muscular strain of mostly instrumental space rock, Fuxa with some attitude?). The room here is more of the DIY/all-ages renovated dump type than actual club or bar (note: no alcohol). We get up and play a good solid set, got some heads bobbin and hands clapping. A far cry from the philly show, but, no complaints. The third and final band tonight are called Hovland. They are a suprisingly good 3 piece in that melodic & intricate indie-rock vein of bands like Death Cab For Cutie & Karate. Our gameplan is to grab a room outside of Pittsburgh, Cleveland only being a short hop away tomorrow
Scott - this place (MIT) is littered with old computers, TV's and bus station chairs, if you turn your head just right, you can catch the faint sour aroma of teenage puke. Pittsburgh oh Pittsburgh, you are philly's angry little sister.

While the last band played Dave & I ducked out of the club and started exploring the perimeter. We came across some miniature sculptures of power-lines and radiotowers in a vacant corner of the industrial park. Dave and I promptly transformed into giant 1950's robot monsters and started to stomp across the tiny landscape. lenola monster

Also in the park was a graveyard of old Pepsi vending machines, hundreds of 'em in various states of disrepair. They were lined up like soldiers in formation. We got down on one knee and made a silent prayer to all the dead midgets that lived inside of the machines. Little people who made our lives better by handing us tasty carbonated beverages in convenient locations. Poor dead midgets. A nationwide plea should be made for vending machine awareness. We say farewell to the M.I.T. , find a room and watch info-mercials all night.
