DAY 2
11.2.99
- cleveland OH - Speak In Tongues
sean - we awoke to cold driving rain outside our room at Red
Roof Inn in a pittsburgh suburb. Alot of coffee and alot of coffee cakes
got us up and out and on the road. A short but treachorous drive to
Cleveland, Dave at the wheel battling the blinding spray of 18 wheelers.
At my urging we decide to kill some time by locating Bent Crayon records
store in Cleveland. I'm the only one being a consumer today and make
2 purchases. We arrive at Speak In Tongues way too early, sit in van,
work on computer & camera. We then decide to drive aimlessly around
downtown Cleveland in search of this place we visited on our last tour
that serves amazing grilled sandwiches with coleslaw and french fries
on the sandwich, but, no luck. Still having plenty of time we opt to
drive out of town and secure a room for the night. It is agreed that
Fuckberry seems to be losing his hair. First band, Rayzakk Solar
System, absolutely brutal, and i needed it badly. bass/drums/screeching
electronics, a complete noise & hardcore assault. full face ski masks,
bassist standing on top of amp while playing. Midset, one member kills
the lights, opens huge bags of leaves onto the audience, picks up a
leaf blower with spotlight somehow attatched to it and briefly turns
the club into an autumnal tornado while bass & drums build to an armageddon
climax, brilliant! Next up are The Basketball from kent, ohio.
Very complex and powerful, Fugazi and older Meat Puppets
filtered through the Don Cabellero math book. very young and
insanely good drummer. some faithful heads stick around for us. it is
much more fulfilling seeing a small group of folks completely freaking
out than having a ton of people standing there comatose. we play human
jukebox and honor requests for an encore which ends with Cleveland's
biggest Lenola fan (Jason from the band Cripple Kid) taking over
on drums for the last few minutes. I walk out into the crowd and enjoy
the rare occasion of actually watching Lenola (kinda). not half bad.
Cold rain turns to sleet on the drive out. back in the room, Steven
Wright on Conan O'Brian has us in tears. I am becoming well
aware that Scott's tour entries will be making mine look as stiff as
Al Gore.
scott - We are slowly starting to settle into our tour driving
habits. the van is pretty big so we all have plenty of room to sprawl
out. We break out the books. Unlike music, we all have different tastes
in literature: Jays brings his usual assortment of magazines; High
Times,Black Tail and Mad. Sean is busy reading Judy Blume's
"Hello? are you there God? Its me Margaret" for the umpteenth time.
I regiment myself to a strict diet of four Barbara Cartlandt or Danielle
Steele romance novels a day. Dave is partial to wiring schematic designs,
old television owners manuals and Hardy Boys books, though he
really shouldn't read while he drives. Tonight, Jay spilled "tour juice"
(beer) all over his new "tour jeans".

- they say you can't see color or smell anything when you dream.
So how come in my rock & roll dreams all i see are red lights and
a slight smell of beer and urine? |

| jay
- its all about getting drunk when you are not big, and its all
about getting really drunk when you are really big. |
