DAY 5
Lenola
- tour entry 5 -
"the windy city blows up our skirt"
Chicago - Empty Bottle 11.5.99 |

scott - we load into the Empty Bottle and i make a beeline to
the restroom to check them out. yep, the place is a shithole, we'll
do just fine tonight. sean - pre-show mass bonding among patrons and
bands via back-to-back episodes of the Simpsons. amongst celebrity
tonight, headliners Special Goodness contains a Weezer guy
or two. club soundman is member of the band 5ive Style as well
as his one man band The Lonesome Organist. great club with nice
folks running it. the downside? we somehow got awarded the first slot
of the night, of 4 bands. bummer. we await the arrival of long-time
chi-town Lenola booster and friend Myke Adams.

longtime lenola friend Myke
we chow down with our pal Myke, very nice fellow, you would like him.
we go on and summon up the beast that dwells within us to rise up from
our bellies and spew forth a mixture of nasty bile and venom that is
called rock and roll. Purjenke Shift went on next. very well
dressed young men complete with skinny ties and Kennedy horn rimmed
glasses. if Man or Astroman?, Bill Gates, and Stephen Hawkings ever
get married and decide to have kids, their first born would be named
"Purjenke Shift"
.
Adam the taper- another great chi-town chum
sean - the negatives of having to play first tonight are eventually
outweighed by the good response we get from the folks who are there
to see us. the night is a "release show" for the new issue of a magazine
called Copper Press. CP was formerly known as Pok and had done an article
on Lenola in their last issue as Pok. it was great to finally put faces
to the names of Steve and Royce who do the zine. they operate their
zine on a very similiar wavelength as we do the band in regards to DIY,
and the good and bad that comes with it. over some suds we bemoan the
horrid state of distribution for what we both do, and bond a bit on
the Us vs. Them mentality inherent in commiting most of your waking
hours to something for which you get very little return financially,
but have such a love for that you devote yourself to it without question.
Neutrino goes on and plays their last show ever, another damn
good drummer. they are followed by the basic fuzz pop of Special
Goodness. The pay we receive tonight wildy exceeds our expectations,
so we drive north out of chicago with dumb grins all singing along to
the Rutles.

The last time we we're in Chicago,
the guys pulled the ol' birthday scam on me at a mexican restaurant.cheeky
bastards!
